GAME OF THRONES: ONE MILLION ANGRY FANS RAISE PETITION FOR REMAKE OF FINALE

The Game of Thrones season eight finale has not even aired yet … and fans are already requesting a makeover of the concluding season. What at first seemed like petty online remarks have grown into an enraged petition from the show’s viewers, intent on registering displeasure with the turn of events in the show.

The Game of Thrones season eight finale has not even aired yet … and fans are already requesting a makeover of the concluding season. What at first seemed like petty online remarks have grown into an enraged petition from the show’s viewers, intent on registering displeasure with the turn of events in the show.

As of Thursday morning a Change.org petition under the title “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers” had more than 350,000 signatures. By this morning it had over 1.04 million.

“The showrunners, David Benioff and D B Weiss, have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (ie, the books) to fall back on,” the petition reads.

Game of Thrones has always had a reputation for not pleasing its audience, but that has been a good thing until this season. This season has seen all the character developments get thrown under the bus, as well as bad lighting and noticeable mistakes.

It’s all highly unlikely of a show that took three years to produce its final season.

“This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!” the petition says.

Long, dark night

The petition originally began with a target of 15,000 signatures, which was reached on Wednesday. A revised target of 300,000 was surpassed on Thursday and a newly revised target is now aiming at 1.5 million signatures. By this morning, the petition had been signed by more than 1.04 million Game of Thrones fans and the number of signatories continues to grow.

Fans started boiling after the third episode, The Long Night, subjecting it to heavy criticism for its lighting. There were dozens of complaints that the cinematography was too dark, making it difficult to discern what was happening. A Polygon entertainment reporter tweeted that it was “visually incomprehensible”.

A mistake in episode four led to a takeaway coffee cup appearing on a table in front of the character Daenerys. This was digitally removed for the streaming version, but too late for the first broadcasts.

Ruined beyond repair

The petition was created after Monday’s episode, The Bells, which drew thousands of strongly negative reactions from fans online over the actions of Daenerys Targaryen and Jamie Lannister, two of the show’s best-developed characters.

Jamie went from being the villain of the show to one of its sweethearts, much as Daenerys increased in power and influence. So seeing them branch out and becoming involved in things their characters do not stand for “was poorly done”, viewers argued. The criticisms attracted support from some of the co-stars of the HBO series.

In one review of the episode, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper said the series had been “ruined beyond repair”.

Rocketing ratings

Despite the petitions and bad reviews, the show’s ratings are going through the roof. According to HBO, season eight is averaging 43 million viewers gross per episode, an increase of more than ten million compared to season seven.

The Bells, which aired on Monday, was watched by a record 18.4 million people across all HBO platforms. This exceeded the previous episode, which focused on the Battle of Winterfell and pulled in 17.8 million viewers.

The much-anticipated final episode goes out on tonight. It is expected to bust the top rating so far.
