President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo says entrepreneurship holds the key to turning the country’s fortunes around.

He believes the state must do all it can to ensure that those who set up businesses succeed in order for them to create wealth and employ more people.

The president said this in a statement signed and issued on his behalf by the Minister for Business Development, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, to mark the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Global Entrepreneurship Week that begins today.

In a glowing tribute to the Ghanaian entrepreneur, President Akufo Addo asserted that the importance of entrepreneurship to harnessing the creative energies of young people in a bid to giving them the dignity they desire and building a strong and great nation.

“We need to do all within our power to create an entrepreneurial climate, to enable our young people to come up with creative ideas that can be developed into businesses,” he emphasized.

President Akufo Addo said, to show leadership, his government had already launched National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan.

Under the programme, the state will support start-ups and small businesses by providing the much needed funding and capacity building that will ensure they lay the right foundations on which they can build successful businesses. Government has set aside US$10 million for this project.

President Akufo-Addo said government plans to scale up funding for the NEIP to 100 million United States Dollars in the ensuing years.

“Our own indigenous businesses make us proud and preserve our dignity as a people,” he emphasized.

This move, according to the President, is to ensure that the entrepreneur plays a significant role in his bid to “change the economic conditions in our country for the better, to ensure that young people see it as a place of opportunities, instead of the place from which they flee at the peril of their lives.”

“Fostering Entrepreneurship and Innovation to advance job-creation and economic prosperity are at the heart of my administration,” he stressed.

President Akufo Addo described entrepreneurs as problem solvers who work to shape the future and called on all Ghanaians, the Media, Civil Society Organizations, Academia and the public to mark the Global Entrepreneurship Week.

“Together let's unite to advance job-creation, unleash innovation and fight poverty through the power of entrepreneurship,” he concluded.
