The internal bickering in the opposition National Democratic Congress has taken another turn, with the National Organizer of the party, Kofi Adams, suing Network Broadcasting Limited, operators of Radio Gold, and four members of the party  for damages of GH30 million for making alleged defamatory comments against him in relation to the party’s defeat in the 2016 general elections.

The four NDC members are Kodzo Keglo Hamenya, Okaikoi North Constituency Secretary; Emmanuel Ashaley Tetteh, Communications Officer, Klottey Korle Constituency; Stephen Afutu Neequaye, Communications Officer, Okaikoi Central Constituency; and James Deku, alias Agbee, of West Legon.

According to Mr Adams, the four, who belong to a group called Action Movement, at a press conference carried live on Radio Gold last month, described him as a “useless National Organizer and Campaign Coordinator” who connived with other party stalwarts to cause the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 elections.

“All Kofi Adams knows is to steal money and cars and disrespect everybody,” the group said, and called on the party to investigate the likes of Stan Dogbe, Stephen Opuni, Omane Boamah, Felix Ofosu Kwakye and Kofi Adams, adding, “the campaign money that they have hidden must be collected from them immediately.”

According to them, Mr Adams “brought no strategy into the 2016 elections; we have not seen any proactive skills directed towards winning the 2016 elections. His attention was only on what he can selfishly take away from the party. We want to know from JM the wisdom in making Kofi Adams the National Campaign Coordinator.”

But the NDC National Organizer has described the accusations as false and subsequently prayed the court for “an order for an unconditional retraction and an unqualified apology for the said defamatory statement/broadcast/publication, doing so separately and in the Daily Graphic newspaper, and for same to be given equal prominence as the complained statement/broadcast/publication within 14 days from the day of judgment.”

He is further asking for “General damages for defamation; exemplary damages for malicious defamation; compensatory damages of GHC600, 000 each for injury to character and integrity and cost including legal fees.”

According to the Statement of Claim, the plaintiff (Kofi Adams) “has been honoured by past President of the Republic Of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who appointed him as a member of the board of directors of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited.”

It continued, “Plaintiff by virtue of the offices he has held has been known by the Ghanaian public and abroad and is respected by right-thinking members of Society, and also as responsible husband and father of three school –going children.”

According to the particulars of the Statement of Claim, “Defendants alleged and their said defamatory statements meant and were naturally and ordinarily understood by right-thinking members of society to mean plaintiff was useless and a criminal who had no regard for anyone.”

It added “Defendants alleged and their said defamatory statements meant and were naturally and ordinarily understood by right-thinking members of society to mean plaintiff was a known criminal.”
