LORDINA TO LEAD MAHAMA 2020 CAMPAIGN

Politics

After helping John Mahama to secure the nomination to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) again as the 2020 presidential candidate, some insiders say they are starting to worry. After helping John Mahama to secure the nomination to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) again as the 2020 presidential candidate, some insiders say they are starting to worry. The former President, they say, has not learned any lesson from the mistakes which led to his humiliating defeat in the 2016 elections.

They cite what they describe as “the unhelpful interference” of Lordina Mahama in the 2016 campaign as a major factor that contributed to her husband’s defeat.

Back in charge

Information shared with the Daily Statesman shows that the former First Lady has resurfaced to lead the campaign as she did in 2016, organising all kinds of splinter groups to sing the praises of her husband and herself.

“Even though many key NDC members are unhappy about the centre-stage role she intends to mount again, they are unable to voice it for fear of being victimised or neglected,” our source said yesterday.

Insiders have expressed deep dislike for Mrs Mahama “because of the way she misconducted herself and broke the back of the party, which contributed immensely to the disgraceful defeat, following which she went into hiding”.

Mrs Mahama is reported to be on the verge of finishing reconstituting the team to prosecute “their comeback campaign”.

The campaign has already hit a snag following Mahama’s infamous “boot-for-boot” declaration in the Volta Region. This was compounded by leaked recordings of NDC national chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo which have prompted widespread condemnation.

Plot against chairman

The Daily Statesman is reliably informed that Lordina Mahama is pushing for Julius Debrah, the former Chief of Staff who is her close pal, to be chosen as her husband’s running mate.

Mrs Mahama’s desire to see Mr Debrah named as running mate is believed to have led Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s national communications officer, to invite Mr Ofosu-Ampofo to a meeting where agents of the Mahama faction allegedly recorded the national chairman. They are said to have planned a hatchet job to destroy Mr Ofosu-Ampofo and get rid of him.

Both Mr Debrah and Mr Ofosu-Ampofo are from the Eastern Region, therefore Mr Debrah cannot be chosen as the vice-presidential candidate if Mr Ampofo remains national chairman.

Insiders also say that the Mahama faction in the NDC wants to destroy Ofosu-Ampofo because he was not the President’s choice.

The Mahama group supported Dan Abodakpi in the contest for the chairmanship but Mr Ofosu-Ampofo was able to bulldoze his way to victory, to their shock and displeasure.

Deep cracks

Sources very close to the Mahama household say Mrs Mahama’s resurfacing is not helping matters, as her abrasive attitude is causing many problems.

What is said to be making matters worse for the former President is that he is unable to confront his wife or cage her.

“Now that Lordina Mahama has resurfaced, the NDC is bound to suffer again at the polls, as it happened in 2016, because she is a huge albatross around the neck of the party,” an insider told the Daily Statesman.

“Lordina is so sure that she will become First Lady again, and so wants to control the campaign and control John Mahama so that she will be the one calling the shots.”
