EDMUND DELLE OF THE CPP RESIGNS AS NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

Politics

The national chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmund Delle, has resigned from his position as well as from active politics.

The national chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmund Delle, has resigned from his position as well as from active politics.

In an interview with the Daily Statesman yesterday, James Kwabena Bomfeh, the acting general secretary of Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP, said the resignation comes at a time when the party is putting in place strategies to redeem its lost glory in Ghanaian politics.

Mr Bomfeh had earlier issued a statement explaining that Professor Delle had resigned the CPP chairmanship following “the ancestral call to lead his people as the paramount chief of the Nandom Traditional Area”.

Forward ever…

The acting CPP general secretary told the Daily Statesman that even though the party considers his resignation from the chairmanship position, the party and active politics as regrettable, “It would not adversely affect the fortunes and forward march of the party.

“Like those before him, Professor Delle contributed his bit and has passed on the baton to the transition team to usher in the new order of re-engaging with the original base of Ghana’s oldest political party,” Mr Bomfeh said.

He noted that the resignation opens ways for others in the party to show what kind of leadership qualities they possess and what efforts they can make to turn the party’s fortunes around.

The earlier release from the acting CPP general secretary congratulated Professor Delle on his enskinment as Naa Professor Edmund N Delle Chiir VIII and wished him the best in his new leadership role.

It expressed the hope that he would excel as the leader of his people and have a positive impact on Ghana as a whole.

Lost glory

The CPP, which turns 70 on June 12, according to the acting general secretary, “is undergoing the reorganisation process to redeem her glorious past as the youth and activists party”.

In this regard, he said, what the party needs is fresh ideas and strategies on the way forward, “especially at this time that we are seeking ways to become more relevant in contemporary Ghanaian politics”.

Hajia Hamdatu takes over

Meanwhile, the party has appointed Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim as its acting chairperson.

Her appointment was made by the CPP’s central committee following the unanimous acceptance of the resignation of Professor Delle as chairman and leader.

Until her appointment, Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim was first vice-chair of the party, elected to that position.

Under the party’s constitution, she automatically became the candidate to fill the vacancy left by Professor Delle.
